I feel like these blog posts are really just all of the video ideas I've been wanting to make, but haven't had the time to, or haven't done enough research to create a scientifically or academically sound argument. Like this one about eye strain. The age of the digital screen. The age of staring at an 13" box without looking away. If our ancestors could see us now...
I read somewhere that an average person blinks 15 times a minute, but that falls to around 5 times when looking at a digital screen. These numbers might not be correct, but the idea is. Our eyes get so fatigued and just so, so dry. But we persist. Why? Because we feel we must. Because of work. Because of school. Because we'd rather entertain ourselves with 10 second videos (albeit, hundreds of them) than go to sleep.
My eye strain has gotten progressively better over the course of the year, after being quite a nuisance for a long, long time. But it has just acted up again in the past couple of days because I haven't been taking care of my eyes. Will jump back onto that ASAP.
A bit of background about my eyes:
- wearing contacts on and off since end of 6th grade, but have always been uncomfortable in them
- dry eyes, even when I just wake up
- dry eyes, even when I put in eyedrops
- surprisingly, eyes were not dry when I wore contacts in Florida. Maybe it's the climate? Interesting.
Things that helped:
- Chinese herbal tea with chrysanthemum and jue ming zi (决明子). We call it "Eye".
- Sleeping early. Yep. And waking up early.
- Using ice packs. Right when you wake up or whenever your eyes feel strained.
- Eye exercises. Basically, looking around in a circle and "stretching" your eyeballs muscles out. Bring a finger out and in towards your face and use your eyes to follow it.
The tea definitely helped the most... or maybe that's because I only tried the other techniques a few times. Should get on that soon.
