Inpatient derm consult presentation template!
How I structured inpatient derm consult presentations! 1️⃣ One-liner “This is Mr. X, a 56-year-old man with a history of [pertinent PMH], admitted for [reason for admission]. Dermatology was consulted for [derm concern].” 2️⃣ Relevant hospital course Briefly mention the most relevant parts of the hospitalization/patient's history. Is there concern for infection? Heart failure exacerbation? Recent surgery? Autoimmune disease flare? What’s the story? 3️⃣ Derm history Why was derm consulted? When did the rash/lesion start? How has it progressed? Is it itchy, painful, spreading, bleeding, etc.? For example, if you’re worried about a drug rash, consider making a drug chart/timeline: • When were new meds started? • Any new antibiotics? • When did the rash appear? 4️⃣ Physical exam Be as descriptive as possible: morphology, distribution, color, scale, borders, arrangement, and associated findings. If possible, use language that points to the diagnosis as accurately as possible. 5️⃣ Pertinent labs/imaging Examples: eosinophilia, LFT abnormalities, infectious workup, imaging if relevant. 6️⃣ Assessment & plan What’s most likely? What else is on your differential? Why are certain diagnoses lower? Do you want to stop any meds, start treatment, biopsy, trend labs, or follow clinically? Just my two cents! Hope this helps :) #thingsilearnedinderm #presentations #medstudent #dermatology #inpatient
